WHAT IS A DENTAL EXTRACTION?

A tooth extraction is a dental treatment in which the tooth is taken out of its jawbone socket permanently. To put it simply, there are two kinds of extractions: surgical extractions and normal general extractions.

A tooth that has either not yet broken through the gum line or that has broken off at or below the gum line and is difficult to remove may need to be surgically extracted.

WHEN MIGHT YOU NEED A TOOTH EXTRACTION?

A tooth extraction may be necessary if you have:

  • bad gum disease
  • bad tooth decay (cavities)
  • a deep infection in a tooth
  • broken tooth
  • orthodontic reasons e.g. overcrowding of teeth
  • problems with a wisdom tooth
  • trauma affecting your tooth or teeth

The longer you wait to extract a tooth, the greater the chance of long-term harm. It can result in a misaligned jaw, unstable or receding gums, pain and sensitivity when biting or chewing, or even infection.

A tooth extraction can be completed in a single session or over a number of visits. Simple tooth extractions involve administering an injection, then using forceps to remove any exposed teeth.

Many would concur that having a tooth extracted is not a pleasant experience, despite the fact that it can help enhance our general health and welfare. However, our goal at Dr. Ramisz Dental & Facial Cosmetic Clinic is to minimise discomfort throughout the procedure.
