Restricted mouth opening management AKA TRISMUS
WHAT IS TRISMUS?
The painful disease known as trismus, or lockjaw, causes the jaws to close partially. When a person with trismus cannot open their mouth widely, it can have difficulty speaking, eating, and maintaining good oral hygiene in addition to pain.
When a person’s mouth cannot open more than 35 millimetres (mm), they have trismus. It can be brought on by radiation therapy for head and throat tumours, infections, oral surgery, damage to the jaw, or malignancy.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF TRISMUS?
The most typical sign is having trouble opening your mouth as much as normal. Additional signs and symptoms consist of:
- Your jaw muscles feel tight, as if you have muscle cramps in your jaw.
- Your jaw hurts when you’re not talking, eating or trying to move it.
- It hurts to chew solid food.
- It hurts when you yawn.
- Headaches and earaches.
WHAT CAUSES TRISMUS?
Many illnesses and medical problems are associated with trismus. Treatment-induced headache, neck, and facial pain, as well as wisdom tooth extraction, are the most frequent causes. Additional reasons encompass:
- Inflammatory conditions
- Infections
- Trauma
- Peritonsillar abscess (PTA)
