Do your gums bleed after you floss or wash your teeth? Have your gums become reddish-coloured for no obvious reason? When you bite or chew, does it hurt?
WHAT IS A GUM DISEASE?
The tiny bacteria in your mouth solidify to form plaque when they come into touch with food particles and mucous. A condition known as gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, can be brought on by plaque buildup on your teeth over time. Gums that are red, swollen, or bleeding are common signs of gingivitis.
Periodontitis, a more complex issue that can cause significant tooth damage or even tooth loss, can arise from the early stages of gum disease, or gingivitis, if it is not treated quickly. Even more concerning medical issues like heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes have been related in studies to severe gum disease.
Gum disease can be treated in a number of ways at our dental clinic. The best way to combat gum disease is to avoid it rather than treating it after the fact. For the purpose of tracking the development of your teeth and looking for gum-related problems that may not be immediately noticeable, routine dental exams are crucial. Regular cleanings are essential for avoiding oral plaque and tartar accumulation, which is the main risk factor for gum disease.
