Corrective jaw surgery AKA ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY
WHAT IS CORRCETIVE JAW SURGERY (orthognathic surgery)?
Orthognathic surgery is a type of oral surgery. Orthognathic surgery aims to provide a proper bite and a pleasing appearance by modifying the size of the chin, lower jaw, and/or upper jaw.
Adults are more frequently in need of orthognathic treatment because there isn’t any active growth that can be used to guide the jaws. Such surgery may also be necessary for some teenagers with substantial jaw discrepancies.
After receiving orthognathic therapy, the majority of patients are happy with the results and typically report having a higher quality of life.
The following are typical face characteristics linked to an uneven jaw position:
- A “weak” lower jaw or chin
- A prominent lower jaw or chin
- A “gummy smile” (showing too much teeth and gums)
- An “edentulous look” (not showing enough teeth)
- An anterior open bite (front teeth not touching when back teeth are fully closed)
- Inability to fully close lips together without straining (also known as lip incompetence)
- Asymmetry of the face
DO YOU NEED A CORRECTIVE JAW SURGERY?
The alignment of the upper and lower jaws is achieved through corrective jaw surgery. It may lead to a more harmonious lower face, which enhances the appearance of the face and could boost self-esteem. It might be necessary to have jaw alignment surgery or corrective jaw surgery to fix:
- Issues relating to biting and chewing
- Facial asymmetry issues like underbites, overbites and crossbites
- Open bite and other jaw closure issues
- Speech and swallowing issues
- Teeth grinding and excessive wear
- Birth defects and facial injuries.
BENEFITS OF JAW SURGERY:
– Notable enhancements to chewing efficiency
– Sturdier orthodontic outcomes (teeth are less likely to shift when braces are removed)
– Enhanced periodontal health (gum health)
– Reduced strain on the jaw joints
– A balanced face profile that offers aesthetic advantages
Your orthodontist at Dr. Ramisz Dental & Facial Cosmetic Clinic will use state-of-the-art equipment to demonstrate to you the overall functional and aesthetic advantages of orthognathic surgery in addition to discussing any concerns you may have about healing, stability, and possible hazards. If orthodontic treatment is able to address the issue, then perhaps orthodontic surgery won’t be required. We will decide whether or not orthognathic surgery is the best course of treatment for you at your consultation visit.
