WHAT IS A PRE-PROSTHETIC SURGERY?
Pre-prosthetic surgery involves cleaning your teeth in order to prepare them for the insertion of a prosthesis.
The primary objective of this pre-prosthetic surgery is to alter the oral environment in order to rid it of disease and maybe improve its form and function to better meet the needs of wearing a complete denture.
WHO REQUIRES SURGERY BEFORE PROSTHETICS?
- Patients with early tooth loss
- Naturally occurring reduction of the bony ridge (where the denture seat in)
- Pain which is not relieving by conventional prosthodontic measures.
What does pre-prosthetic surgery involve?
One or more of the following procedures may be necessary to adequately prepare your mouth for a denture:
- Bone smoothing and reshaping
- Removal of excess bone
- Reduction of bone ridge
- Removal of excess gum tissue
- Exposure of impacted teeth
